Freestanding or Built-In Appliances?

Kitchen and Bath Depot • Dec 07, 2016

One of the most important considerations when undergoing a kitchen remodel is your appliances. There are a wide variety of choices when it comes to selecting appliances for the kitchen. Whether you’re installing a fridge, oven, or any other appliance, there is always the option of either getting appliances that are built-in or freestanding. Here’s a quick rundown of both types and their advantages and disadvantages.

Freestanding Kitchen Appliances

Freestanding kitchen appliances stand on their own and do not need to be attached to the structure of your kitchen units. They can be easily slotted beneath worktops and must be placed on the floor. Generally, freestanding kitchen appliances are less expensive than built-ins and have a simpler installation process that is easier to change in the future. However, freestanding kitchens are not as seamless, and cooktops must be both electric or both gas.

Built-in Kitchen Appliances

Built-in appliances are integrated visually and physically into the surrounding cabinetry. These appliances provide a seamless design to your entire kitchen space. Although more pricey, most designers opt for built-in appliances because they offer more versatility in terms of how your kitchen looks and functions. They also can save you significant space and hide unsightly features such as hinges and compressor vents. The only significant disadvantage is that integrated appliances are not trivial to move or change out.

Which is Right For You?

If cost is not an issue and you want to create the most seamless kitchen design with appliances that will last, it’s worth looking at built-in appliances. By creating a smooth transition from your appliances to your cabinetry, built-in appliances make your kitchen look truly sophisticated. If, on the other hand, a flush appearance isn’t a big priority and you’d rather have something that is easily moved, a freestanding model might be the way to go. Need more help deciding?
